Continuing Education Certification

Below is a summary of the Continuing Education Certification requirements to renew a real estate license in Massachusetts.  For complete information or instructions contact the Mass. Board of Registration of Real Estate Brokers & Salespersons.

Massachusetts Real Estate Brokers & Salespeople are required to complete 12 hours of continuing education every two years for Real Estate License renewal.

The 12 hours must be completed within the 24 months immediately preceding the renewal date.

For the 12 credits required, you’ll choose 6 Elective Programs - 2 hours each.  Programs may be longer than 2 hours each, but the maximum credit that can be earned for each topic is 2 hours.  Below is the complete list of all the Elective Programs approved by the Board of Registration.  The Board of Registration is the sole authority for approving Continuing Ed curriculum.

For more information you can visit their website:  http://www.mass.gov/dpl/boards/re

To renew your license, you’ll need to attest to having taken Real Estate Continuing Education Units from an approved school.  A list of approved schools is available from the Board of Registration.

The school will give you a certificate for each approved course that you complete.  You're responsible for keeping track of the credits that you earn and for providing proof of completing the 12 credit hours.

Inactive Status

You may choose not to complete the continuing education and be renewed as inactive, but may not practice Real Estate in Massachusetts.  You may receive referral fees from an "active Broker" while inactive (for further information you can visit the Board of Registration's website).  Salespeople may not obtain the one year experience toward a broker license while inactive.

The license renewal fee is the same for either active or inactive status.  To renew as inactive, your completed renewal form and fee must be submitted to the Board of Registration.

The Board of Registration will then provide you with an inactive notice & re-activation form.  Your license will be re-activated only after you have completed your Continuing Education and submitted your re-activation form.
