Required Code of Ethics Training for REALTORS®

Mandatory Ethics Training Deadline December 31, 2008

Have you completed your mandatory NAR Code of Ethics Training Course?

Since January 1, 2001, all REALTORS® and applicants for REALTOR® membership are required by the National Association of REALTORS® to complete 2 1/2 hours of ethics training every four years.

The first four-year cycle ended December 31, 2004, you needed to complete it by then.  We are now in the second four-year cycle which began January 1, 2005 and ends December 31, 2008.

*REALTORS® who have completed this training as a requirement of membership in another association are not required to complete additional ethics training until a new four year cycle begins.

There are two different ways that it can be completed:  on-line or in a class.

Whichever way you choose to get your Code of Ethics Training, do it soon.  If you were a member in 2004 you may have been one of the many trying to "get it done at the last minute".  Please don't wait until December 2008 to do it again.  Avoid the stampede - do it now!

On-line Training

NAR makes the training easy, by allowing you to complete the training for free on-line!  The course is available at realtor.org.  To access the course click here:  on-line training

You'll need your NRDS ID# to log in.  If you don't have it, call the Board Office and get it.

If you've joined the Association within the last 4 years (since January 2001), then you would do the new member Orientation Course.

If you've been a member longer than that, then you would do the Continuing Member Course.

What if a REALTOR® doesn’t meet the training requirement on time?

Failure to meet the requirement is a violation of a membership requirement and results in suspension of membership until the requirement is met.

The consequences of suspension of a REALTOR® for failing to meet the training requirement will be treated the same as suspension for violating any other membership duty as defined in The Code of Ethics and Arbitration Manual, in relevant part, "…suspension of membership rights and privileges and denial of Board services…on terms and conditions expressly stated…including, but not limited to, use of the terms REALTOR® and REALTOR-Associate®…"

In Class Training

If you prefer to do the course in class you can sign up for the program at the Board Office.  The dates of availability are on the latest Continuing Ed Schedule.

Receive CE Credits for Ethics Training

Continuing Education Credits for the renewal of your Real Estate License are now available.

The Mass. Board of Registration of Real Estate Brokers and Salespersons (the Licensing Board) approved the curriculum for the NAR Code of Ethics training as a Continuing Education Credit.  Although the training course is 2 1/2 hours, only 2 credit hours will be available for CE.

The CE program is titled:  Real Estate Brokerage Professional Ethics......RE33RC03

Know the Code!

The Code is what sets REALTORS® apart from other real estate professionals. Distinguish yourself by promoting the ethical duties that REALTORS® owe clients and customers, the public, and each other.

REALTOR® is a federally registered collective membership mark which identifies a real estate professional who is a Member of the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® and subscribes to its strict Code of Ethics.
