The town of Easton is located in Bristol
County and has a population of approximately 23,000 in a total area of 29.2 square miles.
Located 30 minutes to Boston, Providence and Cape Cod, it is primarily a residential community, experiencing
rapid growth, including 2 new major shopping plazas. Plans are in the works to extend the Stoughton line of the MBTA’s commuter rail
service south towards Taunton, Fall River and New Bedford using the abandoned rail line which runs through Easton.
Easton has 3 separate zip codes
and its many localities include Alger's Corner, Daley Corner, Easton Center, Easton Green, Eastondale, Five Corners, Furnace
Village, Goward's Corner, Morris Corner, Morse Corner, North Easton, Pratt's Corner,
and South Easton.
It offers its citizens the enjoyment of Borderland State Park and approximately 15% of the community is dedicated conservation land. The town is home to Stonehill College and Southeastern Regional Vocational Technical High School.
In July 2007, Easton was named
number 48 on Money Magazine's Top 100 places to live in the United States.
The
Town's history is uniquely connected with the establishment of the Ames Shovel company in 1803 and is known as having provided
the shovels which laid the Union Pacific Railroad and opened the west. In 1875,
the shovel production of the Ames plant was worth 1.5 million.
Its
history continued through the Ames family for many generations, including the most notable
of the family: Oakes Ames and Oliver Ames (governor of Massachusetts from 1887-1890). The Ames family shaped the town's economy and are responsible for a number of landmark buildings in the town
designed by H. H. Richardson, originator of Richardsonian
Romanesque style and designer of Trinity Church in Boston. Richardson’s designs include Oakes Ames Memorial Hall, the Ames Free Library and the Old Colony Railroad Station. The community continues to preserve these
buildings today as part of the heritage of Easton.
