A REALTOR® is a licensed real
estate professional who is a member of the National Association of REALTORS® and subscribes to its strict
Code of Ethics. Members are involved in all aspects of the residential and commercial real estate industries, including
real estate brokers, salespeople, property managers, appraisers, counselors and others.
REALTORS® stand for professionalism
and ethical business practices. Real estate professionals place value on belonging to the organization and the right to be
called a REALTOR®.
Benefits of membership include education
and professional development, legislative and political advocacy, publications, discounts on products and services, and research
products and services.

Less than half of all real estate licensees
are REALTORS®.
Over 2,000,000 people hold real estate
licenses in the United States and approximately 800,000 of those are active (participating in a transaction in the past year,
according to ARELLO - the Association of Real Estate License Law Officials).
NAR Tops One Million
The National Association of REALTORS®
has been the largest trade association in America since the 1970s, and is now the first to exceed one million members. Founded in 1908, it has grown from its original 120 members to over 1,000,000 in April
of 2004.
NAR is composed of REALTORS®
who belong to one or more local associations/boards of REALTORS®. The REALTOR® organization
is a three-tiered structure (local, state and national) bringing a member benefits from each level. When you join a
local association of REALTORS® you also receive membership in the state association and the National
Association of REALTORS®.
You can also join one of many institutes,
societies, councils and real estate specialties.

NAR is the national advocate for homeownership,
affordable housing and private property rights.
The "The Voice for Real Estate®"
was approved as NARs unifying theme in April of 1989, and according to 1990 NAR President Norman D. Flynn, the banner "reflects
the spirited attitude of our membership as we address the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead."
